Breakfast
It seems the norm in breakfast at home on a busy morning (at least where I grew up!) was cereal. This can, of course, range from loads of sugar with a tiny bit of over-processed grain to less-processed grain with little to no sugar. In my mother's home, we were limited to non-sugared cereals, and we usually helped ourselves to a bowl each morning. In college I was prone to grabbing a Pop-Tart on my way out the door to class. Talk about all sugar and no substance! On other days in college I was likely to go without breakfast. This is not recommended, since eating breakfast helps jump start the metabolism. Now, though, I usually prefer to breakfast on something that at least includes protein. Protein helps sustain the human body eliminates a blood sugar crash. For my breakfast dose of protein, I like eggs — scrambled, over easy, sunny-side up, poached — so I naturally like to eat eggs for breakfast. It's a healthier protein source than traditional breakfast meats, such as bacon and sausage. To add interest, it's nice to top the eggs with nearly any variety of cheese for flavor. Season with red or black pepper, a dash of salt and it's done. To round this out, I like to eat it with some fresh-squeezed fruit juice. High-quality orange juice is nearly always in my refrigerator. Even when I skip breakfast these days, I nearly always have my daily cup of French-pressed coffee (or two). Whether I enjoy it for the caffeine or the taste, it doesn't really matter to me. For people worried about their caffeine intake, there's always tea. I have, at some times in my life, taken a break from coffee to make sure I'm not addicted, and I usually have a cup of tea instead. English Breakfast is a perennial favorite, and green tea is touted for its health benefits. |
